MUSICTALES Project

A message for interested publishers -

Why story books with music? Because:

Dear reader please take note:

When kids see words everywhere, kids want to read. The MUSICTALES Picture Book project is based on the fact that if kids see music everywhere, they will want to read music, too. This link will lead you to several examples: (example 1 - In My Grandmother's Garden ; example 2 - "Witch, Witch" example 3 "Mockingbird") . Several ohter MUSICTALES Books are also ready for production for your consideration. It will also includes numerous additional book ideas. But beyond any single book idea, this is a project proposal.

The idea is to create storybooks for children with well-known, public domain folk and nursery songs as their text. This is a common practice. There are hundreds of such books currently available commercially. (See some examples at my website) The unique aspect of this proposal is to include the music notation for the song just as prominently as the text.

I hold a Masters degree in music education. (for detailed resume see http://www.wenet.net/~keakle) As a music curriculum expert who has developed many of the original music and art teaching materials for the national arts education website, "ArtsEdge" at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, and the British Columbia, Canada provincial K-12 Curriculum for the fine arts, I know from experience that kids who learn to read music do better in all their school work.

As a musician who has performed for and with kids for 25 years, I know kids love music. As a teacher with 15 years of public school classroom teaching experience, I know from my experience that even more than loving music, kids love to understand it.

As a teacher and author who has worked with kids and who has used many of these Songstory Picture Books in my own classroom for years, I know kids love them, and want to read - and sing them, over and over again.

Have a look at the enclosed examples. I believe that you will agree. This is an idea whose time has come. Given good production and clever illustrations and stories, these books will sell.

Sincerely,
J. Kit Eakle
